Write for HyperQuark Labs
The lab publishes essays, research notes and preprints on how AI systems advise, judge and govern the people who use them. Fellows, alumni, practitioners and researchers write here. An editor reads every piece before it goes live.
What we publish
Three kinds of writing
Essay
600 to 3,000 words
An argument about AI and people: how systems advise, judge and govern the people who use them, at work and beyond. Written for a thoughtful reader, not a specialist.
Research note
1,200 words or more, with an abstract
Work you did: the question, the method, what you found and where it stops. Small and careful beats large and loose.
Preprint
Your paper as a PDF, with an abstract and a summary
A full paper hosted on the lab, with a page that summarises it for readers who will not open the PDF. Labelled as a moderated preprint.
Who writes
Anyone with something to show
You do not need a title or an institution. You need a clear question, honest evidence, and the patience to revise.
- Fellows
- Current HyperQuark fellows, beyond the weekly reports.
- Alumni
- Past fellows, carrying the work forward.
- Practitioners
- People who hire, build or run AI systems and see what they do up close.
- Researchers
- Academics, and researchers working on their own, with something careful to say.
How it works
From draft to published
- 01DraftWrite in the lab's own editor. It saves as you type and shows the piece as it will look.
- 02CheckAn AI read points out unclear passages, claims that need a source, and anything the lab cannot publish. It never rewrites your words.
- 03SendSend the piece to the editor. That version is frozen while it is read.
- 04ReviewThe editor reads every piece. You get a decision with notes: accepted, changes requested, or declined.
- 05PublishAccepted work goes live under your name, with your byline and a citation anyone can copy.
Our side of it
What you can count on
- You keep your copyright. Published work is licensed CC BY 4.0, so anyone may share it with credit to you.
- Every piece carries an honest label: moderated by HyperQuark Labs, not journal peer review.
- A human editor decides. The AI check is advice for you; it does not accept or decline anything.
- Your drafts are private to you until you send them.

Questions
Before you write
Who can write for HyperQuark Labs?
Anyone with an insiderOne account: fellows, alumni, practitioners and researchers. Signing up is free, and the account is how the lab knows the byline is yours.
Is writing for the lab paid?
No. Contributors are not paid and the lab charges nothing to publish. You keep your copyright and the work is shared under CC BY 4.0.
Is this peer review?
No. The lab's editor reads and moderates every piece before it goes live, and each one is labelled as moderated, not journal peer review. You are free to submit the same work to a journal later.
Can I publish something that has appeared elsewhere?
Only if you hold the rights and say where it appeared. The editor prefers work that is new, and will not republish work that someone else owns.
May I use AI tools?
Yes, if you say how. Every piece carries a short statement of how AI tools were used, even when the answer is not at all. The argument and the evidence must be yours.
How long does a decision take?
The editor aims to reply within two weeks. You can see where your piece stands at any time on your writing desk.
Does my piece get a DOI?
Not at present. Each published piece has a permanent address on the lab and a ready-made citation.
